One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
